Defining Spatial Conservation Priorities for the Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus)

چکیده

The Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus) is a culturally iconic wildlife symbol for the South American Andes, but naturally found at very low population densities, and increasingly threatened. Using Range Wide Priority Setting methodology, we (a group of 38 experts) updated historical range (3,230,061 km2), systematized 9998 distribution points across range, identified geographic areas which there was expert knowledge (66%), including where Condors no longer occur (7%), condors are believed to not about condor presence (34%). To prioritize conservation action into future identify existing strongholds, used 21 most important species (i.e., Conservation Units [ACCUs]) that cover 37% revised in size from 837 km2 298,951 km2. In general, ACCUs were relatively small northern portion Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, significantly larger central southern Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, reflecting reduced narrower as well increased threats. can fly extremely long distances so populations many neighboring probably still functionally connected, although this situation also underlines need integrated large-scale efforts species. As function results, make recommendations ensure connectivity engage wide actors efforts.

Defining Conservation Priorities Using Fragmentation Forecasts

Methods are developed for forecasting the effects of population and economic growth on the distribution of interior forest habitat. An application to the southeastern United States shows that models provide significant explanatory power with regard to the observed distribution of interior forest. Estimates for economic and biophysical variables are significant and consistent with theory. Foreca...

Flapping flight of the Andean condor in nature.

Air movement around the napping wing of a bird is strikingly complex; at every stage of the wingbeat cycle the angle of attack and the strength of the relative wind is in flux and uniquely so for each spanwise section of the wing. The motor pattern of a wingbeat has been described in some detail (Storer, 1948) and mathematical models have been proposed (Cone, 1968) yet few measurements have bee...

Distribution patterns of Convolvulaceae in Iran: priorities for conservation

Assessing priorities is the most important action in conservation programs. Rudimentary, mapping of diversity, and distribution patterns have been used to set priorities on diverse scales. The distribution patterns of plant taxa, largely reflect an actual ecological niche. Convolvulaceae s.str exhibits cosmopolitan dispersal of diverse life forms and includes 50–60 genera comprising 1600–1700 s...

Optimized Spatial Priorities for Biodiversity Conservation in China: A Systematic Conservation Planning Perspective

By addressing several key features overlooked in previous studies, i.e. human disturbance, integration of ecosystem- and species-level conservation features, and principles of complementarity and representativeness, we present the first national-scale systematic conservation planning for China to determine the optimized spatial priorities for biodiversity conservation. We compiled a spatial dat...

Defining conservation priorities for freshwater fishes according to taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity

To date, the predominant use of systematic conservation planning has been to evaluate and conserve areas of high terrestrial biodiversity. Although studies in freshwater ecosystems have received recent attention, research has rarely considered the potential tradeoffs between protecting different dimensions of biodiversity and the ecological processes that maintain diversity. We provide the firs...
